Sunday 2nd November saw round 2 of the Rug Racers series held at HRCC. Practice was set by class to give drivers a chance to learn the layout and keep everything even and fair. After a short drivers briefing from Malc and the team racing was soon underway.
Round 1 - In the stock class it was Alex Carter setting the early pace with his Corally, setting a time that would have put him in the top ten of 10.5! Sitting behind him was Round 1 winner Tim Wood with his Serpent and in 3rd Matt Worton running a Cyclone TC. In the 10.5 class, Richard Thorpe set the fastest time with his Corally (remembering to complete his last lap this time :)), with Andrew Low and Ricky Copsey a close 2nd and 3rd. Modified would be the one to watch, with a smoother and faster track from last time, and Adam Rogers set a storming time in the early run, 4 seconds clear of the Corally's of Glenn Domains Chris Delves. Even though the grip hadn't come up yet there were plenty of fast times being set.
Round 2 - Tim Wood found better form and moved up to set the fastest time of the round and take TQ overall for Stock by 1 second. Alex Carter dropped to 2nd and Malc Hall moved into 3rd with his Cyclone WCE. Matt Worton dropped to 4th with Dave Ringsell in 5th with an almost identical time to round 1! In 10.5 it was all change with a lot of the top drivers finding an extra lap from Round 1. Ricky Copsey took top spot, closely followed by Paul Pinkney and Ashley Wiffen. Paul Upton and his Mi3.5 made 4th and David Bowen taking 5th. No change at the top of Modified with another consistent run for Adam, but Brian Eldridge found his pace moving into 3rd and Chris Kerswell into 4th with his Tamiya. The grip was coming up as the results showed, and drivers were really having to tune their cars to make the most of the conditions.
Round 3 - Pace in the stock class was beginning to level out, with a lot of the top drivers all sitting within a few second window of each other, with the top 3 remaining unchanged. In 10.5 positions shifted with Paul Pinkney taking TQ honours and Tim Wood moving up to 3rd (doing 2 classes was paying off again for the young driver). In the modified class, Adam again was king after finding over half a lap on his previous pace. His Xray was looking good with a good balance of speed and power. Chris Kerswell moved into 2nd with the Tamiya 416, dropping Glenn to 3rd.
Final Round - and the fastest round of the day for many of the drivers as the grip now was at an optimum. Even though everybody was getting quicker, few cars seemed to be suffering from grip roll. The Sweep tires were working well with a good balance of grip/wear rate. In stock it was looking like a repeat of Round 1 of the series, but in the end Tim Wood couldn't quite take top spot from a charging Alex Carter. The top 2 ending up 4 seconds clear of 3rd place Malc, and only 1 second appart from each other! This was going to be close. 10.5 and Tim this time set a stormer to take TQ, 0.5 seconds ahead of Paul Pinkneys time from round 3. Ricky rolled up into 3rd spot with his T2 008, and push from Richard King saw him move up the field into 4th.

Finals Leg1 -
In Stock it was Tim Wood that got the drop on Alex on lap 1 and moved into 1st place. Alex made a mistake on lap 3 which allowed Scott Carter into second after picking up places from Malc and Matt who lost time on a lap 1 incident. Alex's car looked very smooth, not loosing much corner speed at all in the turns, but he couldn't make the place back to first. Malc made the move into 2nd after a mistake from Scoft on Lap 13 which cost him 8 seconds and dropped him back to 5th. Alex remained in 3rd and it stayed that way to the line. Tim from Malc and Alex. Would Tim win the class as per the last round? He certainly looked like he could. Malcs WCE was fast and flowing and was starting to look better from his qualifying runs, but Alex's car certainly carried the most corner speed.
10.5's turn, and the A-final lined up on the grid. From the go, Rickey Copsey got the drop on 1st and 2nd and moved into the lead, pushing Tim to a close 2nd. Paul Pinkney only lost a small amount of time on lap 1 but it dropped him down to 5th! As the cars and drivers began to settle it was Ashley Wiffen and David Bowen that set about battling for 3rd place. Ricky dropped out on lap 12 to let Tim through for the lead, a big mistake from David Bowen dropped him all the way to the back of the pack. This gave Ashley 2nd place where he slowly closed in on Tim Wood. It was looking to be a close race between the 2, but Ashley car looked a little harder to drive and he had to settle for 2nd place going over the line 0.5 seconds behind Tim, with Scott Morton a further 2 seconds back. Tim was now 2 for 2.
In modified it was Adam on pole, and going into the first lap it looked like Glen was going to make this a difficult run for him. It only took a lap for Adams tires to kick in and laps times began to drop, but a hard charging Chris Kerswell was also on the pace and moved smoothly into 2nd place. Chris put in a string of fast laps and closed the gap right down on Adam until a small mistake on lap 8 allowed Glen back through into 2nd place. A race ensued between Chris and Glen that allowed Adam to pull away slowly from the battling pair. Brian Eldridge made back some of the places lost on lap 2 to 4th place, but retired with diff problems on lap 16. Glen and Chris had now settled and no matter how hard Chris tried Glen wasn't going to be forced into a mistake. Adam took leg 1, with Glen and Chris following some 4 seconds back.
Finals Leg2-
Back to the A final stock guys and Tim Wood was looking to make it all his own again. Lap times in this class were only a few 10ths behind the super stock guys, but any mistake was heavily punished with big drops in places. On lap 1, Alex dropped to 2nd place with a move from Tim taking the lead. Malc held onto 3rd spot and the rest of the field started changing positions as the lap 1 nerves set in. Both the front runners were showing a very fast pace, matching each other lap for lap but Malc Hall had finally got his WCE working really well and was waiting just behind the pair to make his move. The first of the fast laps from Malc on lap 7 saw him move into 2nd place and another move on lap 13 saw him take the lead. As Tim and Alex fought over 2nd place Malc pushed his lead to a clear 5 seconds as he crossed the line on lap 25 to take the win. With the combined results from leg 1, Malc took the overall win from Tim Wood in 2nd and an unlucky Alex Carter in 3rd.
A final 10.5 and a very determined Tim Wood lined up on pole for the race. Going into the first lap he held onto his position, but Ricky again got off the line quickly and moved into 2nd sitting on Tim's back bumper. A mistake from the pair on lap 3 saw them plummet down the order to 5th and 6th, allowing Paul Pinkney to take the lead from Richard King and David Bowen. As hard as Tim tried he seemed to drop back through the pack until he finally retired on lap 14. Ricky made his way back up the order, and by lap 15 was back into 2nd place with some very fast driving. A small mistake would drop Ricky to 3rd and Richard King was keen to make back his previous place. Ashley couldn't repeat his earlier form, but a hard driving Bryan Loynes made up the most places to move into 4th place from 10th on the grid. As the race ended, it was Paul Pinkney from Richard and Ricky. Overall would go to Paul Pinkney, Ashley Wiffen in second and Richard King in 3rd.
To end the day, it was the turn of the fastest cars on the track, the modified's. Adam was again looking for the win to seal the deal, but any of the top drivers here could challenge for the win. Off the line Adam held position with some smooth driving, with Glen holding second. Chris Kerswell took advantage of Brian's lack of lap 1 grip to slip into 3rd part way through the lap and take 3rd. A tiny mistake from Glen on lap 4 was all the invitation Chris needed to move into 2nd place and again try and close down Adam. The pair were putting in quick lap after quick lap, and as Chris got quicker, Adam responded. Chris Delves moved into 3rd spot with a move on Glen on lap 15, but had to retire several laps later. Glen moved back into 3rd, but Chris and Adam were too far in front to mount a challenge. Adam went over the line 3 seconds in front of Chris, taking the overall win. Glen took second from Chris with a tied score and qualifying positions coming into play.
